When Are Driving Test Dates Released? The 6am Monday Myth Busted

#When are new driving test dates released?

DVSA releases a new batch of driving test appointments at 6am every Monday. This applies every week of the year, including bank holidays. If Monday falls on a bank holiday, appointments still go live at 6am. The batch covers dates 24 weeks from the day they are added, so a Monday release in mid-September would extend the bookable window to mid-March.

The booking window currently runs to 21 February 2027, according to DVSA guidance published on 28 August 2026 and updated on 7 September 2026. That figure moves forward by roughly one week with each Monday release, so it will be slightly further out by the time you read this. The DVSA service itself, at gov.uk/book-driving-test, always shows the live end of the window when you search.

#Does the 6am Monday rush actually help you find an earlier test?

No, and DVSA says so directly. The official guidance published in August 2026 states: "There is no benefit in joining the 6am queue on a Monday if you're looking for a sooner test." The new Monday appointments extend the window by one more week at the far end. If your test is already booked in the next few months, those new slots do not affect your wait at all.

DVSA also says "there is no best time to look for an earlier appointment". Earlier slots appear throughout the week whenever another candidate changes or cancels their booking. Because DVSA cannot predict when those movements will happen, no single time of day or day of the week is reliably better than any other.

DVSA DRT121G data for August 2026 backs this up. In August 2026, 82,717 standard car test slots (11.9 per cent of all slots within the booking window) were still free to book at the point of measurement. That compares with 30,028 slots (4.8 per cent) in August 2025. More availability spread across the week means there is now a realistic chance of finding an earlier appointment at a variety of times, not just at 6am on a Monday.

#How far ahead are driving test dates released?

Appointments are always released 24 weeks ahead of the Monday on which they go live. The window rolls forward by one week every Monday. At the time DVSA updated its guidance on 7 September 2026, the latest available date was 21 February 2027, which is 24 weeks from that update date. By the time you read this the far end of the window will be a few weeks further out.

Twenty-four weeks is the hard limit. There are no appointments visible beyond it, regardless of how far in advance you try to book. If every slot within the window is already taken at your preferred centre, you either wait for the Monday top-up or look for an earlier slot that has been freed by a cancellation or change.

#Do dates release on bank holidays?

Yes. DVSA guidance is explicit: new appointments are added at 6am every Monday, bank holidays included. The release schedule does not pause for Easter Monday, the August bank holiday or any other public holiday. If you have been told to set an alarm for a Monday that falls on a bank holiday, that advice is correct in one narrow sense, but remember that the new slots extend the far end of the window rather than adding sooner dates.

#When can earlier appointments appear?

Earlier appointments become available whenever another candidate changes or cancels their booking. That can happen any time the service is open, which is 6am to 11:40pm every day. DVSA cannot tell you when this will happen at any specific centre, and its guidance says so directly. There is no hidden schedule and no predictable peak.

DVSA also cannot notify you when an earlier slot appears. There is no official alert service, no email or text notification, and no waiting list. The only way to find an earlier appointment is to check the booking service yourself at gov.uk/book-driving-test. Unofficial services that check on your behalf were banned from 12 May 2026, when the rule that only the learner can access and manage their own booking came into force.

#How long do you have to complete a booking?

Once you select an available slot, you have 15 minutes to complete the booking. If you do not finish within that time the slot is released back into the pool. This is why having your provisional licence number, theory test pass certificate reference and payment details ready before you start is important. Fifteen minutes is enough if you are prepared, but it is not a comfortable amount of time to be hunting for documents at the same time.

• A debit or credit card for the booking fee (currently £62 for a weekday test, £75 for evenings and weekends)

#Should I cancel my current booking to grab a new Monday slot?

No. Cancelling your booking and rebooking is almost always the wrong move. When you cancel inside 10 working days of the test date, you lose the £62 fee. Even outside the notice period, cancelling means you are starting fresh from the back of the queue, and the slot you just gave up goes to someone else immediately. Use the change function instead, which moves your existing booking to a new date while keeping your fee and your reference.

From 31 March 2026 you are allowed a maximum of two changes per booking. Cancelling and rebooking does not reset that counter. If you have already used both changes you cannot move the test again at all, so protect them. And since 9 June 2026 a change can only move your test to one of the three nearest centres to your current booking, which limits how far you can travel to grab a slot.
