What is in the UK theory test
The car theory test has two parts and you must pass both in the same sitting. The first is 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes, with a pass mark of 43 out of 50. The second is the hazard perception test: 14 short video clips containing 15 developing hazards, scored out of 75 with a pass mark of 44. The current test fee is £23.
| Part | Format | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 50 questions, 57 minutes | 43 / 50 |
| Hazard perception | 14 clips, 15 hazards | 44 / 75 |
Hazard perception needs video, so it is a separate part we are building next. For now this tool covers the multiple-choice part in full, which is where most of the revision time goes.
The 14 topics the questions come from
Every official multiple-choice question is drawn from one of these 14 topic bands. Practising across all of them, rather than your favourites, is the quickest route to a confident pass. Tap any topic to drill it on its own.
Practise the topic, not a fixed list of answers
The DVSA stopped publishing its real questions in 2012 specifically to stop people memorising answers, so anyone promising "the real questions" is either wrong or breaking the rules. The questions here are original, written to test the same knowledge from The Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs. Because we cite the exact rule behind every answer, you learn the reasoning that lets you handle any phrasing on the day, which is the whole point of the test.
Planning the practical test too
Passing the theory is step one. When you book the practical, the centre you choose makes a real difference: pass rates vary by more than 30 percentage points between the easiest and hardest UK centres. Once your theory is done, check the easiest centres, the best for first-time passes, and the pass rate at your local test centre.
Frequently asked questions
What is the pass mark for the theory test?
You need 43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice part and 44 out of 75 on the hazard perception part. You must pass both parts in the same sitting to pass the theory test.
How many questions are in the theory test?
The car theory test has 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 57 minutes to answer them. There is then a separate hazard perception test with 14 video clips.
How long is a theory test pass valid for?
Your theory test certificate is valid for two years. You must pass your practical test within that time, or you have to take the theory test again.
How many times can you retake the theory test?
There is no limit on retakes, but you must wait at least three clear working days between attempts and pay the £23 fee again each time.
Is this theory test practice free?
Yes. Every question, the full mock test and the topic breakdowns are free with no sign-up and no email. Your progress is saved on your own device.
Are these the real DVSA theory test questions?
No. These are original practice questions written to cover the same topics as the official test, based on The Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs. The real DVSA questions are not public. Practising the topics and the reasoning is what prepares you, not memorising a fixed list.
