How long is the theory test valid for?
The two-year rule, and why it exists
The certificate expires exactly two years after the day you pass. The rule exists so that the knowledge behind your pass is reasonably current when you finally drive unsupervised. There are no extensions, even if test availability made it hard to book a practical in time.
What to do so it does not expire
- Book your practical test as early as you sensibly can, since waits can be long.
- Note your expiry date (two years from your pass) and work back from it.
- If time is tight, an earlier-slot search can help. See our cancellation finder.
If it does expire, you simply pass the theory test again, then book the practical. Use our mock tests to get back up to speed quickly.
