How these papers are built
Each paper draws 50 questions at random from a pool of 228, of which 36 are written specifically for riders: tyre-tread law for motorcycles, visors, daylight headlights, the lifesaver, filtering, pillion rules, chain care, loading panniers, and the licence ladder from CBT to full category A. The rest are the general road rules, hazard awareness and sign recognition questions that make up the bulk of the real bank for every vehicle category. Every answer cites the Highway Code rule or official guidance behind it.
The real test also includes a separate hazard perception part: 14 clips, scored out of 75 with a pass mark of 44, taken in the same sitting. Practise it on our hazard perception page; the clip-scoring rules are the same for every licence category.
After the theory pass
The pass certificate lasts two years and both practical modules have to fit inside that window. Mod 1 is the off-road manoeuvring test on a marked pad; Mod 2 is the road ride. How many questions are in the motorcycle theory test?
The multiple-choice part has 50 questions in 57 minutes, with a pass mark of 43 out of 50, the same format as the car test but drawn from a motorcycle question bank. You also sit a separate hazard perception test of 14 clips, scored out of 75 with a pass mark of 44, and must pass both in the same sitting.
Is the motorcycle theory test different from the car one?
The format is identical but the bank is not: riding questions on helmets, visors, filtering, pillions, chain care and machine control replace the car-specific ones, alongside the general road rules every candidate gets. If you hold a car licence you still have to sit the full motorcycle theory test.
Do I need to pass CBT before booking the motorcycle theory test?
No. CBT and the theory test are independent, and many riders sit theory first while working through training. You need the theory pass before booking the Module 1 practical test, and the certificate lasts two years.
Are these the real DVSA questions?
No. The official bank has not been public since 2012. These are original practice questions covering the same topics, each with an explanation citing the Highway Code rule or official guidance behind the answer, so you learn the rule rather than memorising answer letters.
