Zero Faults on a Driving Test: How Rare Is a Perfect Drive? (2024-25 Data)

Passing a UK driving test with zero faults is genuinely rare. In 2024-25, the DVSA recorded 21,811 zero-fault passes from 1,836,558 total tests conducted, meaning 1.2% of all tests resulted in a clean sheet and 2.4% of passes were zero-fault. A candidate sitting at the national average pass rate of 48.7% has roughly a 1-in-80 chance of passing with no faults at all. The number is low because the test is designed to take candidates through enough varied road situations that some minor fault is almost inevitable.

What counts as a fault on the UK driving test?

The UK practical driving test marks faults in two categories. A minor fault (also called a driving fault) is a momentary or low-severity error that does not create danger: drifting slightly wide on a normal left turn, a slightly late mirror check before slowing, or hesitating briefly at a clear roundabout. Up to 15 minor faults is still a pass. A serious fault (or a dangerous fault) is an error that creates danger or would have done so without the examiner intervening, and one of those ends the test immediately.

A zero-fault pass means no minors and no serious faults across the entire 40-minute test. That is a long time to drive a vehicle in shared traffic with a stranger watching every input, through a route designed to include junctions, roundabouts, possibly a dual carriageway, and at least one manoeuvre, without recording a single mark. The test's own design makes this hard because it deliberately includes situations where a slight hesitation, a lane position that is fractionally wide, or a mirror sequence that is a fraction early or late might be marked.

Should you aim for zero faults?

No, and aiming for zero faults can actually hurt your test performance. The most common way candidates chase a perfect score is by slowing or stopping at junctions where they should proceed: holding back to be absolutely certain no vehicle is coming, taking extra long at roundabouts, or driving slightly below the speed limit to reduce the chance of any marking. These behaviours themselves attract minor faults for undue hesitation, failure to make progress, and use of speed.

The correct mindset for test day is to pass, not to pass cleanly. Passing with 14 minor faults is exactly as valid as passing with zero: the licence is identical, the certificate is identical, and no insurance or employer record checks how many minors were on the test. Candidates who drive to a high standard naturally accumulate fewer faults, but they are driving to standard rather than driving to avoid marks.

Which centres see the most zero-fault passes?

Zero-fault rates tend to be higher at rural and market-town centres where test routes are less congested and junction hazard density is lower. At a centre like Dolgellau or Mallaig, a candidate driving a clean 40-minute route on open A roads with predictable junctions accumulates fewer incidental marks than a candidate navigating inner-city traffic in a dense urban environment. The DVSA does not publish a separate zero-fault ranking, but the pattern broadly mirrors the general pass rate distribution: higher-passing centres also see higher proportions of zero-fault passes.

At a London centre running at 40 percent with dense stop-start routes, the zero-fault rate is close to zero. At a rural Scottish or Welsh centre running at 65 to 70 percent, a meaningful minority of passes carry no marks at all. For candidates, this is not a reason to travel: a zero-fault pass at Dolgellau on unfamiliar roads requires practising on those roads, and any advantage from the simpler route is offset by the unfamiliarity premium.

Historical trend

The 2.4% zero-fault pass rate in 2024-25 sits within a narrow historical band. DVSA data shows the figure has been between 1.5 and 3% in most recent years, without a strong trend in either direction. The test marking standard has not changed materially since the current format was introduced, so the year-to-year variation reflects differences in test route mix, candidate preparation levels, and the volume of tests conducted at different centre types rather than any softening or tightening of the standard.
