Attitude is about courtesy and patience: safe distances, giving way correctly, and not letting other drivers provoke you. Read the key points below, then take the short quiz to check it has stuck. Every point is grounded in the Highway Code.
Keep a two-second gap in good conditions, doubled in the wet. If someone tailgates you, ease off and increase your own gap rather than brake-checking them (rules 126, 151).
A flash of headlights means only "I am here". Never treat it as "go ahead" (rule 110).
Dip your headlights for oncoming traffic and when following another vehicle, to avoid dazzle (rule 114).
Give way to a bus signalling to pull out from a stop when it is safe to do so (rule 223).
Let emergency vehicles through when you safely can, without breaking the law or stopping somewhere dangerous (rule 219).
Only use the horn to warn others you are there. It is illegal when stationary, or in a built-up area between 11.30pm and 7am (rule 112).
