Road and traffic signs: what you need to know

Signs and markings tell you what you must do, what is coming up, and where you are. Their shape and colour carry the meaning. Read the key points below, then take the short quiz to check it has stuck. Every point is grounded in the Highway Code.

Key points: road and traffic signs

  1. Circular signs give orders: a red ring means a prohibition (what you must not do), a blue circle a positive instruction you must follow.
  2. Triangular signs warn of a hazard ahead, such as a bend, a junction or a crossing.
  3. Rectangular signs give information: blue on motorways, green on primary routes, white on minor roads.
  4. The STOP sign is the only octagon, so it is recognisable even if obscured, and the give way sign is an inverted triangle.
  5. The national speed limit sign is a white circle with a single black diagonal stripe.
  6. A red X over a motorway lane closes it, and a red circle with a white horizontal bar means no entry.
