Key points: incidents and emergencies

  1. Make the scene safe first: hazard lights on, and a warning triangle at least 45 metres back on an ordinary road (never on a motorway) (rules 274, 283).
  2. If a casualty is unconscious, keep their airway open and check breathing; if they are not breathing normally, call 999 and start CPR.
  3. Control heavy bleeding with firm pressure, and cool a burn with plenty of clean, cool water.
  4. After a collision involving injury you must stop, and report it to the police within 24 hours if you do not exchange details (rule 286).
  5. On a motorway, leave the car by the left, stand behind the barrier and call for help; do not attempt repairs by the carriageway (rule 275).
  6. From 2026 the theory test includes CPR and defibrillator questions.
