Key points: vehicle handling

  1. In fog use dipped headlights, adding fog lights only when visibility drops below 100 metres, and switch them off when it lifts (rule 226).
  2. On snow or ice, drive slowly and gently in as high a gear as possible to reduce wheelspin (rule 231).
  3. Going down a steep hill, select a lower gear so engine braking helps control your speed (rule 160).
  4. Coasting with the clutch down or in neutral reduces your control, especially downhill (rule 122).
  5. If you aquaplane in heavy rain, ease off the accelerator and do not brake harshly until grip returns (rule 227).
  6. Slow down and use your visor when dazzled by low sun, and keep the windscreen clean inside and out (rule 237).
