What does the Rest Area sign mean?
The Rest Area sign (MUTCD D5-1, D5-1a, D5-2) is a guide sign under the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the national standard the states build from. It directs road users to a rest area and how far it is.

What a horizontal rectangle means. Usually guidance: direction, distance and destination. Also used for some regulatory plaques mounted under another sign.
What blue means. Motorist services: rest areas, hospitals, fuel, food and lodging.
Guide and service signs. Direction, services, recreation: three colors doing three jobs, and not one of them carrying a duty. Work out which job the color does and most questions in this group answer themselves.
What has to be there before the words REST AREA can be used?
Section 2I.05 of the MUTCD 11th Edition (December 2023) opens with two Standards. Rest Area signs have a retroreflective white legend and border on a blue background. And signs with the legend REST AREA shall be used only where parking and restroom facilities are available. Both, not one.
A roadside area without restrooms should be signed for the main service it does offer. Parking only gets PARKING AREA (D5-9 series). Picnic tables and parking get PICNIC AREA, ROADSIDE TABLE, or ROADSIDE PARK (D5-10 series). A scenic stop uses SCENIC AREA, SCENIC VIEW, or SCENIC OVERLOOK (D5-11 series). Those are different sign series, not a rest area with a smaller legend.
The legend REST AREA is reserved for a site with parking and restrooms. A wide shoulder is not a rest area, and the sign is not permission to stop on the interstate itself.
How far ahead is the 2 mile board supposed to be?
On a freeway or expressway, a D5-1 sign should be placed 1 mile and/or 2 miles before the rest area. The Okaloosa County board on eastbound I-10 reads REST AREA 2 MILES, so it is that advance sign, not the exit itself. A D5-2a sign shall be placed at the exit gore. A D5-1a may stand between the advance sign and the gore, or a second D5-1 may take its place, with a distance under 1 mile shown to the nearest half or quarter mile as a fraction, not a decimal.
On a conventional road, the manual asks for a D5-1 and/or D5-1a in advance so drivers can slow down, then a D5-5 at the turn-off, or a D5-2 if there is an exit ramp. A Next Rest Area sign (D5-6) may stand on its own or under one of the advance signs. On this I-10 post it reads 39 miles. That number belongs to this assembly, not to a statewide spacing rule. The posts also carry NIGHTTIME SECURITY and VENDING MACHINES panels, legends Section 2I.05 does not standardize.
Can you stop on the I-10 shoulder instead?
Florida Statutes section 316.1945(1)(a)11 (2025) bars stopping, standing, or parking on the roadway or shoulder of a limited access facility, except as FDOT regulation provides, or on the paved part of a connecting ramp. A vehicle disabled by mechanical failure or a crash may be parked on that shoulder for up to 6 hours. Being tired is not that exception. Subsection (4) makes a violation a noncriminal traffic infraction, punished as a nonmoving violation. The statute sets no time limit for the rest area itself. FDOT says a Florida Administrative Code rule allows the general public 3 hours at a rest area, and commercial motor vehicle drivers who are subject to hours-of-service rules 10 hours.

This site is 2 miles ahead. The next one this sign names is 39 miles ahead. At a steady 70 mph, 39 miles is about 33 minutes. The photo shows no speed limit sign, so 70 is only an example speed.
- 2Leave at the gore, not on the shoulder
The 2 mile board is advance notice. The required gore sign, D5-2a, marks the split. Coasting onto the shoulder to "wait for the ramp" is the stop section 316.1945 restricts.
- 3Expect parking and a restroom, not a motel
Those two facilities are what the words REST AREA promise. VENDING MACHINES is a separate panel on this post. It is not part of the D5-1 legend, and it does not add fuel or a bed.
Luis, eastbound I-10, Okaloosa County
- 1He is tired and wants a restroom, and the right shoulder looks wide. The sign says the rest area is 2 miles ahead and the next one is 39 miles beyond that.
- 2He stays in the through lanes for those 2 miles. Stopping on the shoulder to rest would not be the disabled-vehicle case, so the 6 hour shoulder allowance in section 316.1945 does not cover him.
- 3He takes the exit at the gore. If he skips it, the only later rest area this assembly names is 39 miles ahead.
Outcome. He uses the signed site, which under Section 2I.05 must have parking and restrooms. The sign did not tell him the exit number or how long he may stay. FDOT's limit for the general public is 3 hours, enough for a restroom stop and a short rest, not a night's sleep.

Section 2I.05. A Next Rest Area panel (D5-6) can be added under an advance sign. It does not change which of these legends is honest.
A mile marker locates you on the route. The hospital symbol is a different service. Gas, food, lodging, and telephone are general services, not a rest area.
What is the Rest Area sign often mistaken for?
Green guide signs. Blue is reserved for road-user services, tourist information and evacuation routes under MUTCD Section 1D.05.

Questions drivers ask about the Rest Area sign
Is every rest area signed 2 miles ahead?
On a freeway or expressway, Section 2I.05 says a D5-1 should be placed 1 mile and/or 2 miles in advance, so either or both may appear. The Okaloosa County photo is the 2 mile version, with the next-area panel under it. A conventional road does not get that 1 mile and 2 mile pair. There the advance sign only has to give you room to slow down before the turn.
The next one is 39 miles. Is that how Florida spaces all of them?
Thirty-nine miles is the numeral on this eastbound I-10 assembly in Okaloosa County. Section 2I.05 allows a Next Rest Area panel and does not set a standard gap. The next site in the other direction, or on another interstate, can carry a different number. Do not study 39 as a test answer about rest area spacing.
Can I sleep in the car at a Florida rest area, and for how long?
Section 2I.05 requires parking and restrooms before the REST AREA legend may be used, and says nothing about how long you may stay. Florida section 316.1945 sets 6 hours only for a disabled vehicle on the shoulder of a limited access facility, not for a car in a rest area lot. The limit comes from FDOT: its rest area page says a Florida Administrative Code rule allows the general public 3 hours, and commercial motor vehicle drivers subject to hours-of-service rules 10 hours. A short nap fits. A full night in a passenger car does not.
Do NIGHTTIME SECURITY and VENDING MACHINES change what the sign means?
They are on the same posts in the Okaloosa County photograph, under the 39 mile panel. Section 2I.05 does not define those two phrases and does not make them part of D5-1 or D5-6. The promise of the main legend is still parking plus restrooms. Vending machines are extra information on this one installation, not a fuel stop and not a staffed office.
