Can you take the permit test online in Texas?
No. Texas has no general online knowledge test. You sit the exam at a TxDPS driver license office, or you meet the knowledge requirement inside a driver education course: DPS states that if you have not taken the test during the classroom portion of driver education, you take it at the driver license office. That course route is how most Texans actually get through it, because the Less Tears More Years Act requires every applicant under 25 to take a driver education course, and completing certain courses removes the requirement to sit the Class C knowledge exam at a DPS office. So Texas offers no at-home proctored exam of the kind California and Florida run, but a large share of applicants never sit the exam at a DPS counter either. Checked in September 2026.
