What happens if you fail the permit test in Texas?
Texas gives you three attempts per application, then the application dies. The Texas Driver Handbook DL-7 states that if you do not pass the knowledge and driving exams on your first attempt your application is held for 90 days, and that after 90 days or three failed exams a new application and fee are required. Transportation Code s. 521.161(d) says the same in statute: three examinations of each element per application, and after a third failure a new application accompanied by the required fee. The Texas Department of Public Safety, Driver License Division publishes no mandatory waiting period between individual attempts, so the practical limit on how soon you can retake is appointment availability rather than a rule.
